Pumps brand reinintroduced into Africa at Mozambique sugar estate

Company News Tuesday, October 20, 2015: Brehnor Pumps (Pty) Ltd

South Africa-based pumps manufacturer Brehnor Pumps will supply and install two FE 807, 1200 mm Ornel Floodlifter axial flow pumps at the Xinavane sugar estate, in Mozambique – the first Ornel Floodlifter pumps of this size on the African continent – during December and early January in 2016.

JSE-listed agroprocessing company Tongaat Hulett owns the Xinavane sugar estate, about 110 km north of Maputo.

“The installation of these pumps represents the reintroduction of the Ornel Floodlifter brand to Africa” says Brehnor Pumps MD Greg Peake.

Brehnor Pumps is the African representative for Australian manufacturer and owner of the Ornel Floodlifter pump brand, Fluid Engineering, which manufactures pumps capable of high-volume requirements of up to 3 600 l/s.

Peake notes that the project, which includes the civil design of the pumpstations, is valued at more than R5-million.

The pumps will be used to control conventional drainage and manage excessive rainwater common to the area.

“Floodwater and or excessive rainwater can have disastrous effects on sugar cane fields; therefore, it is vital to dewater the area in a short time. The Ornel Floodlifter pumps were chosen for this purpose,” Peake emphasises.

The two FE 807, 1200 mm Ornel Floodlifter pumps will each deliver a flow rate of about 3 600 l/s at a discharge head of more than 4 m.

“The Ornel Floodlifter pumps operate at a particularly high efficiency rate, which means that they can be driven with relatively small WEG premium efficiency motors and can operate at only 490 rpm,” Peake adds.

Brehnor Pumps also manufactures the complete range of Brehnor axial flow pumps, from 200 mm up to 900 mm in size, with flows up to 2000l/s, at a head of 25m for the larger pumps.“These pumps are designed to meet specific needs where high volumes and low head conditions prevail,” says Peake.

Axial flow pumps are used for dewatering purposes and to transfer large volumes of water from rivers and storage dams into irrigation systems. Other uses include raw water supply for potable water treatment plants, high-volume product transfer in process plants and high-yield borehole pumping.
