New Research Drives Sensor Development

New Research Drives Sensor Development

Product News Thursday, July 3, 2014: EngNet - Engineering Network

Recent investment in research and development by Lanarkshire based SST Sensing is paying off as the company announces a new innovation in liquid level detection. SST Sensing have developed an optical fluid sensor that retains the reliability of optical sensors but at a price point normally associated with float switches.

Siobhan Dalziel, Marketing Manager at SST Sensing explains what’s behind this “We carried out a consultation programme with customers and they told us they’ve always used Fluid Switches because the price point for optical sensors was too high. This despite all agreeing that optical sensors were the preferred sensor to use. Because Float Switches have moving parts they can be susceptible to mechanical failure particularly if there is debris in the liquids they measure. As optical sensors have no moving parts they are much more reliable in that environment. We tasked our team with designing an Optical Level Sensor that would be targeted to OEMs for price sensitive applications that can be manufactured at a price point similar to a Float Switch. They done it and it is now available to purchase”.

"These new Optical Sensors have been robustly tested across a number of aggressive and corrosive liquids in applications including tank levels, engine coolants, leak detection, telecoms and even mobile phone masts and have come through with flying colours.

We’re very excited about this, it’s the culmination of a lot of hard work by a lot of different people.”
